Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking Statement

Our commitment
Intemed Ltd is opposed to modern slavery, forced labour, servitude and human trafficking in all forms, and to the exploitation of workers anywhere in its business or supply chain. The company recognises that the recruitment and deployment of temporary clinical staff is an area of established risk within healthcare, and that the greater part of that risk sits with the people Intemed engages rather than within its own small internal organisation.
Intemed's turnover is below the threshold at which section 54 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 requires a statement. This statement is published voluntarily. We will not describe Intemed as having eliminated modern slavery risk from its supply chain unless that position is supported by complete, current and appropriately verified evidence.
Our organisation and supply chain
Intemed is a clinician-led elective insourcing provider operating across the United Kingdom. The company contracts with NHS and HSC Trusts to deliver consultant-led planned elective activity within the Trust's own facilities, systems and governance framework.
Its supply chain consists principally of:
registered clinicians engaged directly by Intemed, including nurses, operating department practitioners, healthcare assistants and consultants;
providers of occupational health assessment, criminal record disclosure and identity verification;
information technology, cloud, communications and professional services suppliers;
where used, third-party recruitment or workforce supply organisations.
Intemed does not manufacture, does not hold goods for resale and has no overseas operations.
Where the risk sits
The company assesses its principal risk as arising in the engagement of clinical workers, and specifically in relation to:
workers recruited internationally, or holding time-limited immigration permission, who may be dependent on a single engagement;
recruitment fees, debt or deductions imposed on a worker by a third party as a condition of obtaining work;
the retention or withholding of a worker's identity documents by any party;
arrangements in which a worker is paid through an intermediary and cannot see what has been deducted;
suppliers further down the chain whose own labour practices are not visible to Intemed.
Intemed judges the risk within its own directly engaged workforce to be lower than in a multi-tier agency chain, because the company recruits, checks, contracts with and pays its clinicians directly.
Our priorities
Direct engagement and direct payment: Intemed engages its clinicians directly and pays them directly. Payment is not routed through undisclosed intermediaries, and no deduction is made from a worker's agreed rate other than those required by law or expressly agreed in writing with that worker.
No fees to workers: Intemed does not charge any worker a fee for finding work, for registration, for compliance clearance or for training. Where an external check carries a cost, Intemed meets it. The company will not knowingly engage a worker who has been charged such a fee by a third party.
Identity documents: Original identity documents are seen, verified and returned. Intemed does not retain, hold or withhold a worker's passport, biometric residence permit or other original identity document under any circumstances.
Right to work and employment checks: Every clinician must complete Intemed's compliance clearance before deployment. Clearance is built on the requirements of the NHS Employment Check Standards and the equivalent HSC standards, covering identity, right to work, professional registration, employment history, references and criminal record disclosure. Right to work is re-verified for any worker with time-limited permission.
Ethical international recruitment: Where a clinician has been recruited from overseas, Intemed works within the United Kingdom's Code of Practice for International Recruitment in Health and Social Care and does not actively recruit from countries on the associated restricted list.
Suppliers: Labour standards form part of supplier selection. Suppliers are expected to comply with the Modern Slavery Act 2015, to satisfy themselves as to their own supply chains, and to notify Intemed promptly of any concern arising in connection with work performed for the company.
Speaking up: Any worker, supplier or member of the public may raise a concern about modern slavery or worker exploitation, in confidence, to compliance@intemed.co.uk. Concerns may be raised anonymously. No person raising a concern in good faith will be disadvantaged for doing so.
Governance and accountability
The Chief Executive approves this statement and holds responsibility for the company's position on modern slavery, supported by the compliance function, which carries day-to-day responsibility for the checks described above.
Concerns are recorded, investigated and, where the threshold is met, referred to the police, the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority or the Modern Slavery and Exploitation Helpline. Where a concern arises in connection with work delivered for an NHS or HSC Trust, that Trust will be informed.
Training and awareness
Guidance on identifying the indicators of modern slavery, and on the action to take where an indicator is present, is provided to those responsible for recruitment, compliance clearance and supplier selection. Awareness of how to raise a concern is included in the information given to every clinician at registration.
Reporting and transparency
Intemed will review this statement annually, will record the checks and decisions that support it, and will report on any substantiated concern and the action taken. The company distinguishes between controls that are in operation, controls that are planned, and matters that remain under assessment.
Continuous improvement
This statement reflects Intemed's current position and will develop as the company grows, as its workforce increases in size and as its supply chain becomes more complex. It will be updated to reflect NHS requirements, government procurement guidance and applicable legislation.
